How to Test a Microwave Door Switch

Testing a microwave door switch using a multimeter.

Introduction

Testing a microwave door switch is one of the most effective ways to diagnose why a microwave will not start. The test checks whether the switch opens and closes correctly when the door latch presses it.

Most microwave door switches can be tested using a basic multimeter.

Tools Needed

To test the switch you will usually need:

• A multimeter
• Screwdriver to remove the microwave cover
• Basic access to the door switch assembly

Always disconnect the microwave from power before opening the appliance.

How to Test the Microwave Door Switch

Follow these steps carefully.

Step 1 — Disconnect Power

Unplug the microwave to prevent electrical shock.

Step 2 — Remove the Outer Cover

Most microwaves have several screws on the back that allow the cover to slide off.

Step 3 — Locate the Door Switch Assembly

The switches are usually mounted in a plastic bracket near the door latch.

If you are unsure where the switches are located, see:

Step 4 — Test the Switch with a Multimeter

Press the switch button while checking continuity.

A working switch should:

• show continuity when pressed
• show no continuity when released

If the readings do not change, the switch is faulty.

When Replacement Is Necessary

If the switch fails the continuity test, it will need to be replaced.

Door switches are inexpensive and widely available.
